OCTOBER 05 - CAPPING IT OFF FOR WIMPEY

Z-Led Capawal GRP Coping System

The potential problem of creating a decorative finish to parapets in timber frame buildings has been solved for housebuilder George Wimpey by Z-Led Ltd.

George Wimpey (Southern) is part of a consortium redeveloping a former Boots the Chemist depot in Aldershot, turning the brownfield site into an estate of some 475 homes. Among its 122 homes is a four-storey block of 16 apartments featuring timber frame construction and a parapet wall.

The timber framing meant George Wimpey could not mechanically fix stone coping to the parapet, as it would with traditional construction techniques, so a solution had to be found: the use of Z-Led Capawal GRP Coping System.

Elaborated Dave Parker, George Wimpey Southern's technical manager, "Capawal provided an ideal solution, as it can be mechanically fixed or mortared into position. An added benefit is that Capawal is lightweight, making it easy to manoeuvre up to the four-storey high parapet. From the ground, you cannot tell the difference between Capawal and traditional stone copings."

A high performance weather resistant coping system, Z-Led Capawal provides an impervious barrier and is designed to shed water clear of a parapet wall.

Manufactured from durable GRP with a gelcoat waterproof top surface, Capawal is supplied as standard in a textured Portland grey stone finish. The system is through-coloured, providing maximum resistance to fading through UV degradation. Most BS RAL colours are available to order.

Available in 3m lengths and six standard widths designed to suit a range of common wall thicknesses whilst providing sufficient overlap at joints, Capawal has a complete range of corners, end stops, T junctions ridge and valley units. Special junctions can be made to order. Capawal can be used to comply with Building Regulations 2000 Approved Document C4.

Z-Led is part of the Building Product Design Group, which undertakes a continuous programme of research and development to bring to market innovative yet practical building products in line with changing requirements.
