FEBRUARY 10 - STOP GAS AND DAMP IN ONE

Protect GDB10 Gas and Damp Barrier A solution to the issue of addressing potentially harmful ground gases and damp from penetrating new developments has been developed by Z-Led Ltd.

The company’s new Protect GDB10 Gas and Damp Barrier not only stops any methane, carbon dioxide and radon from entering the building, but simultaneously provides a damp-proof membrane.

When installed with Z-Led’s Cavity & Slab Edge Protection System, the GDB10 Barrier provides a complete universal barrier for protection of buildings against both gas and damp. When used as an oversite membrane below floor slabs or suspended floors, it provides a complete solution to compliance with Building Regulations Part C and BRE Report BR 414 2001 ‘Construction of buildings on gas contaminated land’, without any need to install an additional damp proof membrane, helping reduce both labour and material costs.

Protect GDB10 is independently assessed as a gas and damp barrier by BRE certification (certificate number 127/07). The barrier meets the requirements of both the NHBC RSK ‘Guidance on Evaluation of Development Proposals on Sites where Methane and Carbon Dioxide are present’ and CIRIA C665 ‘Assessing Risks Posed by Hazardous Ground Gases to Buildings’, making it, Z-Led claims, the ideal choice for both domestic or commercial build applications.

The multi-layer reinforced polyethylene/polypropylene membrane with integral continuous aluminium foil is supplied with full fixing instructions. Tough and durable, Z-Led Protect GDB10 provides excellent tensile strength and enhanced puncture and tear resistance, yet it is easy to cut and, at only 17.5kg/roll, lightweight to handle. Each roll is 40x long and 2.5m wide.

Gas and Damp Barrier Matt McAndry, Z-Led Technical Manager explains, “Harmful soil gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and radon can enter properties through routes including cracks in floors and walls, construction joints and wall cavities. These have to be addressed, to ensure compliance with Approved Document C which states that ‘reasonable precautions shall be taken to avoid danger to health and safety caused by contaminants on or in the ground covered by the building or any land associated with the building’. This is on top of other requirements for protecting the building from damp.

“We aim with our Protect GDB10 Gas & Damp Barrier to help simplify the solution process, by developing one single product to meet both requirements.”

The Z-Led Protect GDB10 is complimented by a range of accessories to ensure effective installation of the membrane and ventilation of gases, including Slab Edge Protection Trays, Joint Protection Tape, Universal Pipe Seals, Airbricks and Periscopes. Z-Led is part of the Building Product Design Group which specialises in bringing to market innovative yet practical products in line with changing requirements.
